The musical Wicked, which details the friendship and rivalry of the two witches of Oz, is making its return to Toronto. It will be the third run in Toronto in five years. On Tuesday, Mirvish Productions announced that Wicked will start its run on October 20 at Canon Theatre.

Wicked is a hit Broadway musical. Lyrics and songs are from Stephen Schwartz and the book is from Winnie Holzman. Wicked is based on a best selling novel by Gregory Maguire called “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” The novel is a parallel to the story told by L. Frank Baum in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Wicked tells the witches’ side of the story.

The historic Canon Theatre is located in Toronto, Canada. It was originally named the Pantages Theatre and was built in 1920 as a motion picture and vaudeville house. Thomas W. Lamb, the renowned theater architect, designed the building. With its original 3,373 seating capacity it was Canada’s largest and most elegant cinema house.

Finding flaws with The Wizard of Oz is very gutsy. The work is so revered, the movie so beloved, and novel a classic as well as controversial at one time. However, nowadays poking holes is in fashion, not to mention a lot of fun.
